For Winter Solstice 2016, Apoptose returns to the forest - and he is not alone: in the past summer the ambient-electronic artist teamed up with classically trained tenor Daniel Sans in a tiny church near the city of Frankfurt. They recorded a new version of "Maria durch ein Dornwald ging". It is a German traditional song of the Advent season. Translated to English the title means "Mary walked through a forest of thorns".
The mysterious atmosphere of this song fascinated Rüdiger Apoptose since his childhood days. "This is not just another carol", he explains. "I always sensed something special in there. To me the words and the solemn melody evoke images of a goddess who cares for the eternal cycle of growth and decay." If you are familiar with the music of Apoptose you'll recognize this topic from his earlier works.
Daniel Sans studied singing at Frankfurt Conservatoire and performs regularly on stage and in TV productions all over Germany. He recorded works of Bruckner, Haydn, Mozart etc., but he is also into Gregorian chant, Medieval and even electronic music. So he felt at home in this collaboration project from the beginning. "The idea sounded fresh to me. When I listen to the music now I can literally see my voice spreading its wings and flying over a snow-covered forest."
